Fact-Checking Policy

At SGA Middletown, we are committed to providing accurate, timely, and trustworthy information to the students and community of Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Middletown. This Fact-Checking Policy outlines our standards and procedures for verifying content before publication.

Our Commitment to Accuracy

Accuracy is one of our highest priorities. Whether we’re sharing news about campus events, student resources, or organizational updates, we take care to ensure that all information published is factual, reliable, and reflective of the most current understanding at the time.

Sources of Information

To ensure the reliability of our content, we rely on the following sources:

  • Official TouroCOM Middletown communications (emails, announcements, and administrative updates)
  • Statements from faculty, staff, or verified departments
  • Direct communications from SGA Executive Committee and class representatives
  • Publicly available academic or medical sources, when applicable

We do not rely on hearsay, anonymous submissions, or unofficial social media posts for fact-based reporting.

Verification Process

Before publishing any article, announcement, or update, the following steps are taken:

  1. Cross-reference with official sources: Information is verified using TouroCOM-issued materials, administrative confirmation, or academic publications.
  2. Review by editorial team: Content is reviewed by the SGA Communications Chair or another Executive Committee member for factual accuracy.
  3. Faculty consultation (if needed): For content involving academic details, health-related information, or policy, we may consult a faculty advisor or appropriate administrator.

Corrections and Updates

Despite our best efforts, errors can occasionally occur. If a factual mistake is identified:

  • A correction will be made as quickly as possible.
  • An update note will be added to the article or announcement specifying what was changed and when.
  • Major revisions may include a note of acknowledgment to the reader or source who identified the error.

We encourage all visitors to notify us of any inaccuracies by emailing [email protected].

Handling Unverified Information

If we receive information that has not yet been confirmed through official sources:

  • It will not be published until it can be verified.
  • If shared in limited form (e.g., as a developing event), it will be clearly labeled as “unconfirmed,” “pending verification,” or “subject to change.”

We avoid speculation, rumors, and assumptions in our reporting.

Responsibility and Transparency

The SGA Executive Committee, particularly the Communications Chair, holds responsibility for ensuring that all published materials meet our fact-checking standards. Our goal is to build and maintain student trust by being transparent about how we gather and validate information.
